I Love the Taliban

Hi. I'm Lee Greenwood. You probably know me best from my #1 hit song, "God Bless the USA".

Like every American, my life was profoundly changed by the horrific events of September 11. On that day, I received two phone calls that would change me forever. The first was from a close friend, calling to share the terrible news. The second call was several hours later. Oprah Winphrey called and asked if I would be willing to sing "God Bless the USA" in a benefit concert at Yankee Stadium. Nobody had requested a live performance from me in years! Yes, this terrible tragedy was just the thing to resurrect my flailing career.

Since the attack, I have been in constant demand. My little patriotic song has become more than just a song. It's a symbol of our freedom, of our spirit which rises above adversity to live and to fight on. As a result, I have been touring constantly for the last few months, doing sold-out shows all accross the country. My albums are selling almost as quickly as "Bomb Osama" T-shirts. I've never had it so good.

I mourn for those who were lost in the attacks, just as I mourned for the popularity I enjoyed in the 80s. When I saw those mighty Twin Towers crumbling on the news, I was reminded of the way my career crumbled into dust, leaving me the dusty ruins of virtual obscurity. Let us take hope, then, that I have risen from the ashes to be reborn as a Top 10 musician once again!

So, I'd like to say to Osama Bin Laden and all of the other terrorists involved... what you have done to us as a nation can never be forgiven. You will suffer greatly for the evil you have done, both in this life and in the next. You have taken so much from this country and it can never be repaid. Still, you have given me back my career. It's true what they say... every cloud has a silver lining. I'm about to step onto the stage and perform "God Bless the USA" for thousands of patriotic Americans. Osama, this one's for you.
